COLOUR OF MAGIC, THE
This is Terry Pratchett’s first tale in the outlandish and legendary Discworld series, following failed wizard Rincewind, who is so bad at magic he only knows one spell and he doesn’t even know what it does, as he plays tour guide to a naive tourist.
This is Terry Pratchett’s ingenious overture to the outlandish and now-legendary Discworld which flies through space carried by four elephants on the back of a turtle…
Failed wizard Rincewind (Bafta Winner David Jason, Hogfather) is so bad at magic he only knows one spell. And he doesn’t even know what it does. This goes some way to explaining why he is expelled from the Unseen University for Wizards. Despondent, he contemplates throwing himself into the river that flows through Ankh-Morpork, the Discworld’s biggest city. However, his attention is diverted by the arrival of Twoflower (Oscar Nominee Sean Astin, Lord of the Rings), the Discworld’s unreasonably optimistic first Tourist. But most of all, his attention is diverted by the tourist’s Luggage which is not only full of pure gold but is also able to walk by itself.
This does not fail to attract the attention of many of the various thieves, assassins and other nefarious inhabitants of Ankh-Morpork. Forced to become Twoflower’s guide by The Patrician, the all-powerful ruler of the city, Rincewind and the tourist are also forced to flee the city on account of being the cause of large parts of it burning down. Fleeing the inferno they embark on the ultimate Discworld road trip.
Rincewind’s departure also seems to have excited the Octavo, the greatest spell book of all, chained because of its danger in the dungeons of the University. And this disturbance has not escaped the attention of ambitiously evil wizard Trymon (Emmy Award winner Tim Curry, The Rocky Horror Picture Show) who plans to become Archchancellor of the University and discover the Octavo’s secrets.
Rincewind, Twoflower and the Luggage tackle angry Druids, Barbarians, fire breathing dragons and mountain trolls on their travels. Twoflower thinks everything is a wonderful adventure. Rincewind just wishes he was back home in Ankh-Morpork. But so too does Trymon who in killing the Archancellor discovers the Octavo’s great secret: it is missing one of its spells—a spell so powerful it will change the fate of the Disc itself. He also discovers that the spell is in Rincewind’s head.
Meanwhile Twoflower, Rincewind and most importantly the Spell, find themselves launched in a deep space vessel over the edge of the Disc into the great unknown of space by the astrozoologists of Krull. While Twoflower dreams of discovering new worlds, Rincewind wishes he would stop falling off things.
Also featuring the voice of Christopher Lee (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) as the voice of Death, The Color of Magic is a super-sized return to the brilliant and hilarious universe of Discworld brought to you by the award-winning production team of the smash-hit miniseries Hogfather.
