The southern bogs are among the most amazing of all the habitats on Earth. A miles-wide slow-moving river of grass and decay, a deep mire that’s home to an amazing array of wildlife. Some, wilder than others.

Responding to a call that her estranged father, Howard, is dying, Melanie Blaime (Cindy Sampson, Supernatural) returns home to the nearly deserted small southern town of Gibbington. Once there, her friend, Jimmy Fuller (Nicolas Wright, The Business), comes clean with the truth: Melanie’s father (Oscar and Golden Globe nominee Bruce Dern, Big Love) is not dying but rather on the run and in hiding from charges that he murdered a teenage girl in the swamps—the latest in a string of grisly slayings. The news brings back terrible memories of the tragic death of Melanie’s mother. It also incites the vengeance of a town mob looking to tear Howard limb from limb.

As Melanie grows intimate with Jimmy, and as the manhunt for her father grows more intense, another victim is claimed. This time it’s the sheriff. But what attacks him isn’t even human. It’s a foul vine-choked mass of mud and earth, impervious to bullets, that can stifle a scream before anyone can hear it. For the terrified people of Gibbington, and for Melanie, the swamps are about to yield even more surprises—those of a local healer with mysterious powers, those of the origin of the creature itself, and those of a shameful town secret buried years ago, now resurrected to enact a terrible vengeance of its own.
