MONTE WALSH
Set in the late 1800s, Monte Walsh tells the story of a die-hard cowboy who refuses to give in to the changing times, even though his lifestyle is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.
The last years of the Old West become a turning point for a fading cowboy struggling to hold on to the traditions that made him a legend.
It’s Wyoming Territory, 1892. Saloons are empty, work is scarce, and the legends called cowboys bide their time in general stores. It’s the twilight of the Old West, and the sun’s setting on Monte Walsh (Emmy and Golden Globe winner Tom Selleck, Magnum P.I., In & Out ), “the best Bronc rider south of Snake River.” But the taciturn roughneck, whose livelihood is growing out from under him, still has his old roping buddies, Chet Rollins (Emmy and Oscar winner Keith Carradine, The Outsider, Nashville) and Shorty Austin (George Eads, C.S.I.), to scale cattle country with and remind him of more dynamic days. He also has Martine (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Isabella Rossellini, Merlin, The Odyssey), the lonely lady of the Harmony Saloon, who still offers a warm night and a pure love that loners like she and Monte would never acknowledge. In this time of transition, the greatest challenges for Monte will be those of the heart and the human spirit.
One of Monte’s buddies is throwing in his ropes for a quiet and respectable future with his new wife. Martine, resigned to a tragic secret, is moving her diminishing “operation” to the bustling railroad spur of Antelope Junction. As for ex-horseman Monte Walsh, he’s been offered a job by Colonel Wilson (Wallace Shawn, Mr. St. Nick, The Princess Bride) to headline as a shadow of his former self in the traveling Wild West Round-Up Show. As Harmony fades into a ghost town, as friends and lovers come and go, Monte Walsh is going to prove to every last living soul who remembers him that he’s lived a hell of a life, and that a real man doesn’t always change with the times.
