Movie stars, motherhood, and murder make for a lethally funny combination as a Beverly Hills mom turns sleuth to uncover scandal upon scandal in the land of the rich and famous.
Beverly Hills—a monument to money and ego and tentative home to struggling children’s book illustrator Lucy Freers (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Justine Bateman, Family Ties), her precocious nine-year-old daughter Chloe (Holliston Coleman, E.R.), and her financially insecure husband Kit (Andrew McCarthy, Straight from the Heart), a film producer who’s most renowned for his last two bombs. Lucy may be dedicated to her family, and she certainly loves the tenuous glamour, but she’s still appalled by her Hollywood neighbours, especially in the hottest A-list trend since collagen injections—motherhood. One of the newest trend-vultures on the block is Julia Prentice (Angie Everhart, 1st to Die), the beautiful trophy wife of TV’s most loveable sitcom star. She adopted her young ornament in Tibet, something small that can fit comfortably in a Gucci car seat. But not long after Julia hauls out little Quanxi for a baby shower, the lacquered mother is found dead, bludgeoned to death and floating face down in Lucy’s swimming pool—appropriately in the shallow end.
Now Lucy’s home has become the most requested stop on the celebrity-death tour bus, but she’s not enjoying the newfound fame—especially since her husband Kit is the prime suspect. He was the last man to see Julia alive, and no one—including Lucy—can ignore the fact that Kit and the victim had an affair years earlier. So what did happen on that beautiful Beverly Hills morning? Justin Caffrey (David Gale, Zero Patience), the irresistibly hunky screenwriter next door, suggests that Lucy investigate for her herself. After all, no one knows their friends and neighbors as well as she does—and no one can get the dirt quicker. But Lucy has no idea how deep—and how dangerous—it’s going to get as she carefully treads the manicured grounds of the rich and famous, because Julia’s killer has more secrets that anyone can imagine—and is more than willing to take on Lucy with the same glamorously grisly precision.
It’s a gleefully inventive addition to the amateur sleuth, a wickedly funny satire of the movie business, and a murder mystery with more twists than the Hollywood Hills. Based on the hit novel by Lindsay Maracotta and featuring an all-star cast that includes Golden Globe winner George Hamilton (The Family), The Hollywood Mom’s Mystery is a comedy that’s sure to deliver killer ratings.
