Former author, Paul Freeman (Golden Globe-nominee Matthew Modine, What the Deaf Man Heard) now teaches creative writing at a local prison. One student who stands out is Charles (Emmy-nominee Obba Babatunde, The Temptations), a convicted murderer who, after twenty-four years behind bars, has proven himself a model prisoner. Through his cathartic writing, Paul discovers what brought the man to this hopeless moment in life. A member of the Black Panthers at the age of nineteen, Charles was convicted of murder when his partner shot the inhabitant of a drug den. Sentenced to life in prison for abetting in a homicide, Charles now wants out. He needs to prove his worth as a model citizen. He needs to become a father to a son he’s never met.
Only one thing is stopping him.Her name is Sharon (Emmy-nominee Michele M. Greene, L.A. Law), the victim’s unyielding sister. A vigilant in her own right, she’s devoted her life to ensuring that Charles would never be paroled. Once a year, she’s made it her duty to write a letter to the board reminding them of the pain she lives with, and of the tragedy that cannot be forgotten. Through Paul’s persuasion, she allows herself to finally make contact with the man she has loathed and feared all these years. It begins with a letter. Where it ends is the last place Paul believed possible, the only place Charles ever dreamed, and the first step for one woman toward finding the courage to forgive.
