SOLDIER’S GIRL
This is the tragic true story of Barry Winchell, a soldier who falls in love with a transgendered nightclub singer. His roommate, Justin Fisher, ignites anti-gay sentiment in the barracks, leading to Barry being beaten to death by a fellow soldier.
Barry Winchell was a soldier stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Calpernia Addams was a local nightclub performer. What happened between them is true. It should have been the perfect love story…
When Barry Winchell (Troy Garity, Barbershop) is assigned to the Airborne Infantry at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, he joins the prestigious “Screaming Eagles,” a division where men bond with the knowledge that someday they may be called upon to lay down their lives for one another. Men such as Barry’s macho roommate, Justin Fisher (Shawn Hatosy, In & Out), an alienated and deeply troubled recruit who finds in Barry a friend he can finally call his own. Then one night, Justin drags Barry to a popular Nashville club. The star attraction is the flamboyantly beautiful—and trans-gendered—Calpernia Addams (newcomer Lee Pace).
Attracted, enchanted, and confused, Barry falls deeply in love. Immediately rumours spread that Barry might be gay. In the closed, “don’t ask/don’t tell” world of the infantry such a tag carries a heavy price. Despite the whispers, Barry unconditionally accepts his love for Calpernia. But Justin doesn’t. Disturbed by this turn of events, and in an effort to “reclaim” Barry for the infantry, he vows to teach his friend a lesson. On Fourth of July weekend, during a drunken bash, tensions flare, jealousies rage, long-held hostilities erupt, and before the night is over, murder turns an unexpected love story into a tragedy.
Based on the shocking, brutal murder of Barry Winchell and the stunning trial of the two men found guilty, Soldier’s Girl is a gripping story of crime and punishment, friendship and acceptance, being in love, and being yourself.
