FOR ONE NIGHT
When black southern high school senior Brianna fights to desegregate her high school prom, she spurs a momentous change in history and tradition. Based on a true story that captivated the country and shook the foundations of a small town.
A black high school student makes headlines and history when she takes a stand for integration in this film of tradition, change, and solidarity inspired by an astonishing true story…
Seventeen-year-old Brianna McCallister (Raven Symone, That’s So Raven) is a bright high school senior in the small town of Mercier, Louisiana. With the end of the school year approaching, Brianna and her best friend Sela join forces to come up with a theme for the high school prom. Brianna’s leaning toward “solidarity,” her goal – to finally bring an end to generations of segregation in Mercier by actively fighting for a single integrated prom, an event now divided between blacks and whites. But Brianna’s fight is met with opposition not only from student officials but also from the majority of Mercier’s adult population and from a combative white city councilman, whose daughter is dating a black student. With her standing as class valedictorian on the line, Brianna remains unyieldingly determined as her fight to bring Mercier into the 21st century becomes more than just a local story…
On leave from her job as a reporter for the Orelanian Times, Desiree Howard (Aisha Tyler, Friends) returns home to Mercier to comfort her parents Edna (Joan Pringle, General Hospital) and James (Emmy winner Howard Slyvester, Innerspace), still grieving over a family tragedy. Desiree is also coming back to an unresolved past—and love affair—with Mark Manning (Jason Lewis, He-Man), Mercier’s school principal and to bitter memories of a town where racist tradition dies hard. When Desiree, desperate for a big story to jump-start a stalled career, hears of Brianna’s fight against school segregation, she uses her media connections to generate coast-to-coast interest. What ignites is an explosive scandal for Mercier High—and for Brianna—as newshounds, activists, and TV crews descend on the town. Now, as friends and family, white and black, come apart and come together, one girl is about to make more than a personal dream come true. Brianna is about to make history.
Directed by Emmy winner Ernest R. Dickerson (Good Fences), For One Night is an important and impassioned film that moves to an inspiring and uplifting beat.
