Based on a true story, The Society Murders tells the harrowing story of the Wales-King murders, a case that has continued to fascinate and dominate the media in Australia long after Matthew Wales (Matthew Le Nevez Marking Time, Tender Hook) confession.

The disappearance of elderly millionairess Margaret Wales-King (Julia Blake Travelling North, Innocence) and her husband Paul King was completely out of character and suggested to her five adult children, and the police, that there was something more sinister going on. After being interviewed, the suspicion fell on Matthew, the youngest of the Wales children, financially dependent on his mother due to the extravagant lifestyle of his Chilean wife Maritza (Daniela Farinacci Look Both Ways, Lantana). For the investigating detective, Nazaretian (Alex Dimitriades Head On, Heartbreak High), it was an unusual case, and he was right to fear that something disturbing was about to surface. His suspicions are confirmed when the bodies of Margaret and Paul are found in a shallow grave not far from Matthew’s house, leading Maritza to confess that her husband murdered his parents. It came as no surprise to his siblings, in particular Emma (George Parker All Saints), all of whom had doubted Matthew. But the real terror of this story lies in Matthew’s motive and method, built up through years of anger and repressed rage.

Matthew’s conviction was welcomed by all, but Maritza’s suspended sentence for perverting the course of justice is rebuffed by the Wales children. The movie brings this chilling yet fascinating story to the screen, unravelling the events that led to the arrest and conviction of Matthew King, seen through the eyes of the Wales family and Detective Nazaretian, as he faces the most challenging case of his career.
